This idea is a popular one. Many people reason that they can get a cheaper/newer/nicer 3000GT non-turbo and turbocharge it later. A few very dedicated individuals have turbocharged the front-wheel-drive 222hp model, but the general consensus is that it's not worth it.

The block is similar between turbos and non-turbos, though not exactly the same. Realistically the non-turbo block can handle plenty of turbocharging, but 10:1 pistons on the non-turbo block will limit how much boost you can make on pump gas -- perhaps as low as 6psi.

Going back to my first statement, you should not buy a non-turbo FWD 3000GT or Stealth and expect to turbocharge it later. One of us bought a non-turbo '93 about 10 years ago and it provided years and years of fun. Non-turbos are generally much more reliable (although at 16 years old, it's anyone's guess). If you can't afford a VR-4 and constant expensive repairs -- which you should be prepared to do yourself -- don't even think about turbos.

Im going to be purchasin a 93 3000gt in a couple of months, it's a original owner with only 40,000 miles on it. I know the car is not the VR4 model but definatly want to add some power to it. Is the non-turbo block the same as the VR4, if not am I going to blow up my engine if I consider a turbo kit. Am I just better off finding a difrent motor and swaping it out once I have juiced it up? Thanks
