New: Check out my page on 3000GT / Stealth Gear Ratios

I’m constantly amazed at how wrong people are when quoting specifications for the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 and its sister car, the Dodge Stealth Twin Turbo. In general I’m surprised at how often 3000GT / Stealth facts are misrepresented in one way or another. Most people misquote 3000GT curb weight, but surprisingly engine specs are often incorrectly stated also. I intend to set the record straight. For easy browsing:

Quick Facts You Might Not Have Known:

  • All turbocharged 3000GTs (and the twin turbo Stealth through 1994) have four-wheel-steering (4WS). The rear steering rack operates from a pump driven by the rear differential with inputs from the front power steering rack. The rear wheels steer in the same direction as the fronts up to 1.5° in response to steering effort. The system is fully operational before 40mph.
  • The heaviest cars are typically the earliest, but only by a small margin. The 1991-1994 cars are close to 3,800lbs, give or take a few pounds. Later 3000GTs can be 20-60lbs lighter, which is due in part to the absence of “active aero” and a smaller sunroof.
  • The 1995-1996 Stealth is the lightest of all years and models because it lacks 4WS, digital climate control, and electronic control suspension (ECS). It’s really only about 100# lighter than most other years at 3,671lbs, and it is possible to find almost all of this weight savings in a car that starts life with all the extras. The chassis code Z15A belongs exclusively to these AWD cars which lack 4WS, including the GTO MR in Japan.
  • The 1995-1996 3000GT VR-4 Spyder is the heaviest of all years and models, weighing in at about 4000lbs due to the retractable hard top and chassis stiffening braces.

I hope this clears up any confusion about typical configurations for non-owners who are curious or looking to buy.
